TCS employ to lose 1.5% of total salary

  • Employees of Tata Consultancy Services will lose about 1.5 per cent of the total cost to company (CTC) salary for the next two months, as the company failed to meet its internal economic value added (EVA) target of Rs 376 crore for the first time.
  • EVA is calculated as net operating profit after taxes minus a charge of the opportunity cost of the capital invested. According to the income structure of most TCS employees, 30 per cent of their salary is variable in nature. This variable component is paid at the beginning of the quarter, in anticipation that the company will achieve a pre-set EVA target. In the third-quarter, however, the company was unable to achieve its goal owing to various factors such as higher onsite component of revenues, lower utilisation rates, rupee appreciation and several one-time taxation issues.
  • If the dip is extended beyond the quarter, it could have a negative impact on employee sentiment and thereby spike attrition for the company, say industry insiders. Already the move has been condemned on various user-generated content such as blogs and forums.

  • The cash reserve ratio stays and the CRR repo and reverse repo rates as well as the bank rates remain unchanged. The policy actually leaves flexibility to change repo and reverse rates in the near future. The Reverse repo rate stays at 6 per cent and CRR at 7.5 per cent. The inflation target for 07-08 also remains at 4 to 4.5 per cent levels and 3 per cent in medium term.
  • The fact that RBI did not go in for sucking out liquidity from the banking system gives the comfort feeling that inflation is manageable.

India successfully launched an Israeli “spy satellite”

  • India successfully placed an Israeli “spy satellite” in the polar orbit after a textbook launch carried out under a veil of secrecy from the Sriharikota space station on 21st January. The homegrown Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C10) carrying the advanced 300-kg satellite TECSAR or Polaris as it is sometimes called lifted off flawlessly from the First Launch Pad (FLP) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre as scheduled revealed Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) .
  • The commercial satellite, which has a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), an advanced radar system, was placed in its intended orbit in 19 minutes 45 seconds after a perfect lift-off.The satellite is reported to be Israel’s most advanced satellite and the radar system allows it to view much more than its existing Ofek satellites that use cameras. It can take pictures of small targets under cloudy and foggy conditions and carry out day and night and all weather imaging. The first pictures are expected to be beamed in two weeks.
  • It is expected to give a boost to Israel’s intelligence gathering capabilities and help keep an eye on its hostile neighbours. (The “spy” satellite is of great importance to Israel as it will be able to track the goings-on in the territory of its main enemy Iran and its alleged efforts to develop nuclear arms).
  • TECSAR is a Synthetic Aperture Radar technology satellite, the design, development and fabrication of which were led by MBT Space, a division of the Israeli Aerospace industries with participation of other high-tech industries such as ELTA, Tadiran, Spectralink and Rafael. This is the second time that a “core alone” PSLV configuration had put a foreign satellite into orbit, meaning only the main PSLV vehicle was used for the TECSAR launch. The additional strap-on engines or booster motors to take up more than 600 kg payloads of satellites were not used.In April 2007, an Italian satellite Agile was put into orbit in such a configuration.

Societe Generale bank fraud costs $7 bn

  • France's central bank and government scrambled to shore up confidence in the banking system after Societe Generale, the country's second-biggest bank, had been the victim of a massive and "exceptional” fraud by a junior rogue trader resulting in losses of 4.9 billion euros (over $7 billion).
  • Anxious to rebuild its shattered capital, the bank announced an immediate capital increase of 5.5 billion euros, already underwritten by rival banks. SocGen, one of France's oldest banks and a world leader in free-wheeling modern financial derivatives, said the losses came to light at the weekend and blamed a backroom trader, who it said had tried to cover up bad bets on the stock market.
  • Bank sources named the trader as Jerome Kerviel, who is in his thirties and who joined the investment bank division in 2000, moving from the middle office which checked deals to the front office or trading desk in 2005. He earned less than 100,000 euros a year. "It was an extremely sophisticated fraud in the way it was concealed," said Societe Generale chairman Daniel Bouton, who offered to resign but has been asked to stay on.
  • Shares in the bank fell more than 6% to 74 euros.
  • If fraud is proved, the loss will be the biggest caused by a single trader, dwarfing the $1.4 billion loss by trader Nick Leeson that brought down British bank Barings in the 1990s.

All Indians must read

'Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country'.

  • Perhaps, these words of late US President John F Kennedy can best describe the spirit behind the sacrifice by three men, Col Vasanth V, Captain Harshan R and Naib Subedar Chuni, who will be awarded this year's "Ashok Chakra" posthumously.
  • Displaying exemplary courage in the face of all odds, all three of them lost their lives fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Vasanth, who was in the 9th regiment of Maratha Light Infantry, chose Indian Military Academy over an admission in IIM and laid down his life in a fire fight when he was leading an operation to flush out militants near Uri town in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • An idealist to the core, Vasanth, in 1997, had also encouraged his wife to set up an organisation, 'The Silent Front', dedicated to the widows of martyrs, as he felt that the stories of the spouses of soldiers were often untold.
  • In a sad turn of event, it would be his wife Subhashini who would receive the award from the President on 26th January.
  • Captain Harshan laid his life leading a bloody battle with militants, who had outnumbered him in the encounter on 20th March 2007 in Lolab area of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • His father K Radhakrishnan Nair, who will receive the award, is naturally proud of Harshan but could not hide his emotions.
  • Like Variant and Harshan, Naib Subedar Chuni Lal, whose career had been full of professional achievements, was not to be satiated till the very end.
  • By killing three terrorists in his last battle, Lal inspired his small team to eliminate all other militants.

Taj Mahal on Sarkozy's itinerary

French president Nicholas Sarkozy is all set to fly to Agra to see the Taj Mahal even though model-turned-singer Carla Bruni will not coming to India.

Taj Mahal ,A Tribute to Love

Taj Mahal stands on the bank of River Yamuna, which otherwise serves as a wide moat defending the Great Red Fort of Agra, the center of the Mughal emperors until they moved their capital to Delhi in 1637. It was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur in a campaign to crush a rebellion after giving birth to their 14th child. The death so crushed the emperor that all his hair and beard were said to have grown snow white in a few months.
  • Agra, once the capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th and early 18th centuries, is one and a half hours by express train from New Delhi. Tourists from all over the world visit Agra not to see the ruins of the red sandstone fortress built by the Mughal emperors but to make a pilgrimage to Taj Mahal, India’s most famous architectural wonder, in a land where magnificent temples and edificies abound to remind visitors about the rich civilization of a country that is slowly but surely lifting itself into an industrialized society.
  • As a tribute to a beautiful woman and as a monument for enduring love, the Taj reveals its subtleties when one visits it without being in a hurry. The rectangular base of Taj is in itself symbolic of the different sides from which to view a beautiful woman. The main gate is like a veil to a woman’s face which should be lifted delicately, gently and without haste on the wedding night. In indian tradition the veil is lifted gently to reveal the beauty of the bride. As one stands inside the main gate of Taj, his eyes are directed to an arch which frames the Taj.

Bird flu,some facts

Bird flu is an infectious disease caused by several subtypes of the Influenza A virus, which is known to affect birds, particularly migratory birds, ducks and chickens. It is also called avian influenza or avian flu. The highly pathogenic Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 virus is an emerging avian influenza virus that has been causing global concern as a potential pandemic threat.
H5N1 has killed millions of poultry in a growing number of countries throughout Asia, Europe and Africa. Since the first H5N1 outbreak occurred in 1997, there has been an increasing number of HPAI H5N1 bird-to-human transmissions leading to clinically severe and fatal human infections.
More research is necessary to understand the pathogenesis and epidemiology of the H5N1 virus in humans. Exposure routes and other disease transmission characteristics such as genetic and immunological factors, that may increase the likelihood of infection, are not clearly understood.

Confident India seek to level series

  • The 72-run triumph at Perth, regarded as one of the greatest wins overseas, will no doubt serve as a tonic for Anil Kumble and his men who have now proved to be worthy challengers to the champion team.
  • India's unheralded pace trio -- R P Singh, Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma -- were highly impressive at Perth and it will be a tough call to leave one of them out to accommodate Harbhajan.
  • The Australians, whose 16-match winning streak was broken at the Perth, have also been strengthened with the towering Matthew Hayden returning to the team after an injury lay-off.
  • India appears to be a better balanced team than the world champions at the moment. Their batsmen are refusing to budge in face of Australia's pace fury and seniors, such as Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, have largely been immovable.
  • The conditions at Adelaide are expected to be good for batting for the first three days. The game tends to move quickly thereafter when the pitch tends to increasingly get up and down.

  • The R&D centre in Bangalore currently employs around 500 people. On whether there have been any job cuts as a result of this shift in focus, the company said there have been “minor changes and reorganisation” and no major firing. In fact, the company will be recruiting more people.
  • Dell hopes to set a “new standard for date centre energy efficiency and flexibility” with the PowerEdge M Series blade.

India both an economic and military powerhouse!!!!

  • In keeping with its aspirations to be viewed as an emerging superpower, India will showcase its hard military power to an international audience with a huge Army-IAF combat exercise in March and the exercise named "Brazen Chariots "so after "soft power", it's time to flex the military muscle now.
  • The list of foreign observers is still being finalised but we expect representatives from around 100 countries. They will be taken to the Pokhran field firing ranges for the exercise and firepower demonstration.
  • The exercise will be the largest in recent times, with the entire gamut of sophisticated weapon systems and platforms, reconnaissance and command and control systems coming into play in a bid to dazzle the foreign observers.
  • The message for the foreign observers to take back home will be that India is both an economic and military powerhouse.
  • India, after all, has spent a whopping $12 billion in the last four years to import military hardware and software. it plans to spend another $30 billion for the purpose during 2007-2012.

Don’t panic, Sensex will be back...

  • Stock prices are subjective. Company profits are objective. Between the two falls the light of wisdom for those trying to read the meaning of this week’s stock market crash. The message for most people: Don’t panic.
  • A lot of the mess in the global stock markets this week was triggered by cautious foreign funds pulling out money in the face of fears of a US recession. This is a bit like a driver braking or using the clutch repeatedly in a traffic jam. You can’t blame either the driver or the car for it.
  • With the US Fed cutting its benchmark rate by 0.75 percentage points in an emergency measure on Tuesday, a key aspect of uncertainty may be over for investors across the globe. US stocks are down, tracking losses in key banks that burnt their fingers in bad home loans.
  • Indian companies, however, are looking towards solid profit growth. In general, stocks are valued by analysts on the basis of their anticipated growth and sales and buttressed by prospects for the industrial sector or economy in question. On all these counts — collectively termed as fundamentals — India’s economy is going strong, and the GDP is expected to grow by 8.5 per cent in 2008/09.
  • Whether it is a Narayana Murthy at Infosys, a Sunil Mittal at Bharti or an Ambani at Reliance, business is about generating profits at the ground level. Global inflows and outflows of capital cause their shares to go up in a futuristic view, but smart investors operate on the oft-proven faith that sooner or later a stock's price catches up with the value shown by its profit - and other fundamentals such as revenues, reserves, land or other assets including human resources.

Guruvayur Temple 'purified' after foreigner's entry........???

  • A 'purification' ritual was performed in the famous Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple,Kerala on Sunday night after a British national entered it, despite his claim that he had converted to Hinduism.
  • The temple thanthri (the traditional high priest) ordered 'punyaham' to be performed after it was found that the British national had worshipped in the shrine, where 'non-Hindus' are barred.
  • Though he supported his claim by showing a certificate issued by the Thiruvananthapuram branch of the Arya Samajam, the priests held that as per rules they would accept only the certificate from the Kozhikode branch of Arya Samajam in such cases.
  • The ban on entry of non-Hindus to major temples in Kerala continues to trigger controversy. Two days ago, top playback singer K J Yesudas, a Christian, had alleged that he was 'insulted' by authorities of Kadampuzha Devi temple in Kerala who refused him entry on religious grounds after inviting him.

Swiss woman raped in Pushkar ,Rajasthan. Incredibly unsafe India???

  • Within days of a 40-year-old British journalist alleging she was raped by the owner of a guest house in Udaipur on December 23, a Swiss tourist has made a similar accusation: That she was sexually assaulted by a hotel-owner in Pushkar, Rajasthan.

  • The Swiss woman, in her late 20s, has said in her FIR filed with the Pushkar police that Nanu Rawat, the owner of Nanu Garden Restaurant and Hotel, raped her about a week ago in one of the rooms. She alleges that Rawat first tried to molest her while she was asleep, and then raped her even as her friend from Canada was sleeping in the same room. The tourist, a singer by profession, had come to Pushkar about a month ago.

  • Agra has reported a number of cases of rape and sexual assault on tourists since September last year.

  • Minister Ambika Soni has called a high-level meeting of state tourism secretaries on January 24 to try and find a solution to this serious law and order problem. Recently, Union Tourism Secretary S. Banerjee wrote to all state governments, reminding them of the ministry’s earlier recommendation to deploy special police at popular tourist sites.

Anil Ambani may be world’s richest man....!!

  • With his wealth estimated at more than $57 billion, Anil Dhirubhai Ambani has emerged as India’s wealthiest citizen after the blockbuster IPO of his Reliance Power, and all indications are that he may jump to the top of the global rich list as well.
The value of Anil’s holdings in seven listed entities will be around Rs 229,363 crore or $57.3 billion at last Friday’s closing price.
  • Market experts expect Reliance Power to list at a much higher value. If the stock lists at Rs 900, Ambani will jump over Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexican telecom tycoon who topped last year’s rich list with an estimated $67.8 billion to his account according to Forbes magazine.
  • At Rs 900 per share, Anil Ambani’s personal wealth would be estimated at Rs 2,75,000 crore or $68.7 billion. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates followed Carlos Slim last year with an estimated wealth of $59.2 billion.

'Sir Sachin' for Gordon Brown

Sachin Tendulkar will join the honoured ranks of Sir Don Bradman or Sir Gary Sobers? British Prime Minister Gordon Brown certainly seems to think so. If he had his way, he would recommend the little master for a knighthood.
"Great players of the modern era — like Sachin Tendulkar — proposed for honorary awards so the British nation can salute their achievements in these sports",he said

If Brown's remarks come true, we could be looking at the first Indian sports knight. In between courting trade and investment from India and China visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown showed where his heart really lay — at the WACA stadium in Perth.

Widespread protests over dropping of Ganguly, Dravid

  • Widespread resentment swept through cricket fans over Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and in-form VVS Laxman being dropped from India's squad for the triangular one-day series with Australia and Sri Lanka in Australia.

  • While cricket fans were angry at the decision of the national selectors, most former Test stars, some of them former selectors, have welcomed the move to build a team for the future, keeping in view the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent.

  • The selectors went along with Dhoni's judgement - after consulting Test captain Anil Kumble - to pick a young squad with a major focus on fielding abilities because the bigger grounds in Australia require strong throwing arms and swift movers. It meant that both Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid find no place in the team.

  • From the team that last played an ODI series, Ganguly and Murali Kartik were left out while an unfit Zaheer Khan was not considered. In their place come Suresh Raina and Piyush Chawla while Ishant Sharma, who bowled well in the Perth win, gets another ODI call. Dinesh Karthik was added as a back-up 'keeper to make it a 16-man squad.
  • Fast bowler Sree Santh retained his ODI spot after being cleared to play after a shoulder injury.
  • Sachin Tendulkar, the last of the senior pros holding onto a place in the ODI team, is expected to be played sparingly due to the fatigue factor. At the most, the 34-year-old would be playing in five out of the eight league games

Plenty of drama at Sydney

  • The Sydney Test was an absorbing one in that it had all the elements that one normally loves to see in a Test match. There were some top notch individual performances that would be remembered for a long time but in the end the fracas between Symonds and Harbhajan overshadowed the memorable segments of that Test match.
  • But for this incident and its aftermath, avid followers of the game will be still talking about the artistry of Laxman and the majesty of Tendulkar. Their knocks set India up in the Test match to try and put the pressure on the Aussies. However, the Aussies prevailed over the challenge posed by the Indians and won the match in the dying moments. On the fact of it, one must hand it to the hosts for hanging on and turning the tables on the visitors but the events that took place in the process were ludicrous.
  • Some words are always exchanged on the field and the onus is on the umpires to control the game in a professional manner. They failed miserably in Sydney on that count and I for one believe that the Test match would have been incident-free but for the poor decisions by the umpires.
  • A mistake or two is understandable but the Indians cannot be faulted if they feel that they were done in by the umpires. This is where the ICC needs to tighten up and be more proactive and stringent in assessing the performance of the umpires. All the brave statements that come from the ICC bigwigs amount to nothing if they replace an umpire on receipt of a protest. In doing so, the ICC makes one curious about its assessment process with regard to the umpires. With all respect to the umpires, poor decisions on the opening day of a Test match on a flat pitch will not be tolerated by international cricketers, especially when such decisions happen to turn the game on its head.
  • Regardless of what transpires with regard to Harbhajan’s ban, the Indians still have a lot to play for and salvage some pride. It is all the more important that the Indians play well to put Australia under pressure as any deficiency on their part will attract more criticism and of course, some taunts from the hosts on the field.
Despite the fact that everyone is aware of what went wrong in Sydney, the Indians will be expected to deliver in the next two Tests. If they fail to make an impression, all the support gained after the Sydney Test will be lost in no time.

Osama bin Laden's son wants to be peace ambassador between West and Muslims

Omar Osama bin Laden, right, and his British wife Jane Felix-Brown, now known as Zaina...

        • Omar Osama bin Laden bears a striking resemblance to his notorious father, except for the dreadlocks that dangle halfway down his back. Then there's the black leather biker jacket.

        • The 26-year-old does not renounce his father, Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but in an interview with The Associated Press, he said there is better way to defend Islam than militancy: Omar wants to be an "ambassador for peace" between Muslims and the West.

        • Omar, one of bin Laden's 19 children, raised a tabloid storm last year when he married a 52-year-old British woman, Jane Felix-Browne, who took the name Zaina Alsabah. Now the couple says they want to be advocates, planning a 3,000-mile (4,825-kilometer) horse race across North Africa to draw attention to the cause of peace.

        • "It's about changing the ideas of the Western mind. A lot of people think Arabs, especially the bin Ladens, especially the sons of Osama -- are all terrorists. This is not the truth," Omar told the AP last week at a cafe in a Cairo shopping mall. Of course, many may have a hard time getting their mind around the idea of "bin Laden: peacenik."

        • He suggested his father did not oppose his leaving _ and Alsabah interjected that Omar was courageous in breaking away, but neither elaborated.

        • Vajpayee had embarked upon a journalist's career, which was cut short in 1951 when he joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of today's Bharatiya Janata Party, the leading component of the National Democratic Alliance. A critically acclaimed poet, he still takes time off from affairs of state to indulge in music and in a bit of gourmet cooking.

        • India's second highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan, was conferred upon him in recognition of his selfless dedication to his first and only love, India, and his more than half-a-century of service to society and the nation. In 1994, he was named India's 'Best Parliamentarian.'

        • In May 1998, India conducted five underground nuclear weapon tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan. Earlier, IAS babus were deciding how and what facilities jawans on those dangerous snow-bound heights should get without ever visiting the region themselves. Vajpayee and George have both risen above petty politics and endeared themselves to the common Indian as statesmen. During Pokhran -2 and the Kargil victory, their leadership shone with the Jai Jawan spirit.

He stands for an India anchored in 5000 years of civilizational history, ever modernizing, ever renewing, and ever re-energizing itself to meet the challenges of the next 1000 years.

No funds to pay salary ,Attention IIT Bombay Alumni Association

        • The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are rated as the world’s third best in engineering education, but the directors of the seven elite institutions are currently trying to get the Union HRD ministry to pay their electricity bills on time!

        • In an indication of a fund crunch at India’s finest educational institutes, IIT-Bombay has recently written to the HRD ministry that they are not in a position to pay next month’s salaries to their staff members. All seven institutes have complained that government allocations are not keeping pace with the rising costs attached to the day-to-day running of these premier institutions.

        • Since the inception of the first IITs in the 1950s, they have entirely relied on government patronage. The budgetary allocation in recent years was roughly Rs 550 crore. However, over the last decade, the IITs have had to tap an extensive network of alumni here and abroad to meet growing requirements. A large percentage of new initiatives are also being driven through industry partnerships.

        • The HRD ministry, which allocates money to the IITs for recurring expenses on routine bills for electricity, water, laboratory material and salaries, has not increased the annual grants since 2002. Despite escalating costs and inflation, the ministry’s allocation has remained constant at Rs 7.04 crore since 2002. In the meantime, actual expenses under this head have risen by an additional Rs 13.15 crore in 2007. To bridge the shortfall, administrators are now dipping into the IITs’ endowment funds, which comprise savings put together over the years

        Bisexuality not a transitional phase

        • Researchers have finally debunked the stereotype that bisexual women are uninterested in or unable to commit to long-term monogamous relationships.

        • The researchers in the United States have carried out a study and found bisexuality in women is a distinctive sexual orientation and not a transitional stage which some females adopt on their way to lesbianism.

        • According to the study's lead author Lisa M Diamond of the University of Utah, "This research provides the first empirical examination of competing assumptions about the nature of bisexuality, both as a sexual identity label and as a pattern of nonexclusive sexual attraction and behaviour.

        • The findings demonstrate considerable fluidity in bisexual, unlabelled and lesbian women's attractions, behaviours and identities and contribute to researchers' understanding of the complexity of sexual-minority development over the life span."

        • The researchers came to the conclusion after analysing nearly 80 non-heterosexual women over a period of 10 years. In the study, they used interview data collected five times over a decade from the participant women who identified as lesbian, bisexual or unlabelled. The subjects initially ranged in age from 18 to 25 years old.

        • The researchers found that bisexual and unlabelled women were more likely than lesbians to change their identity over the course of the study, but they tended to switch between bisexual and unlabelled rather than to settle on lesbian or heterosexual as their identities. Seventeen per cent of respondents switched from a bisexual or unlabelled identity to heterosexual during the study - but more than half of these women switched back to bisexual or unlabelled by the end.
