The process of editorial succession, which began in July 2011, has been completed in The Hindu group of publications with N. Ram stepping down as Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of The Hindu, Business Line, Frontline, and Sportstar.

Siddharth Varadarajan, Editor, The Hindu, has succeeded Mr. Ram, with effect from January 19, 2012, as Editor of The Hindu responsible for the selection of news under the Press and Registration of Books (PRB) Act of 1867.

Tata Housing to build low-cost housing near Mumbai

India's Tata Group launched a low-cost housing project near Mumbai, joining a spate of Indian developers that have moved to the affordable housing segment, as demand dries up for more expensive homes.

Unlisted group firm Tata Housing Development Co said it will invest up to 1 billion rupees in a 1,200-unit township at Boisar, in the outskirts of Mumbai, and will sell apartments at prices ranging between 390,000 rupees and 670,000 rupees.

RISAT

ISRO on Monday(20th April 2009) successfully launched its first all-weather spy satellite that will help security agencies keep a watch on the movements on the borders.
The PSLV-C12, carrying 300-kg Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-2) and 40-kg micro educational satellite ANUSAT lifted off from ISRO's Satish Dhawan space Centre and placed into 550 km orbit around earth.
RISAT has all-weather capability to take images of the Earth and would also be beneficial in mapping and managing natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, besides amplifying defence surveillance capabilities of the nation. It would also help keep track of ships at seat that could pose a threat.
As per specifications, RISAT is different from previous remote sensing satellites as it uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), equipped with many antennas to receive signals that are processed into high-resolution pictures. The SAR, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, gives RISAT defence capabilities.
ANUSAT is the first satellite developed by an Indian university (Anna University), which would demonstrate the technologies related to message storing and forward operations.
ANUSAT is a store-and-forward communication satellite that will help transfer confidential academic materials, including exam question papers, to prevent question paper leakages. It will also help monitor drought and wasteland, urban planning and other studies. This is the 15th flight of ISRO's workhorse PSLV, which had launched 30 satellites (14 for India and 16 for foreign countries) into a variety of orbits since 1993.

Nano Booking

The big day has finally arrived. Bookings for the Tata Nano kick off on Thursday(9th April 2009) and will go on till April 24. Indications are that there could be over four lakh bookings across the country.

Sales of the booking forms, which began on April 1, extended to 30,000 locations across the country.
These included Tata Motors dealerships, branches of SBI (State Bank of India) and 15 other banks which are the preferred financiers as well as various Tata Group outlets such as Croma, Westside, World of Titan and Tata Indicom.
In addition, there were special incentives for Tata Sky subscribers keen on buying a Nano.
Although the exact number of booking forms sold is still not clear, there are no two ways about the fact that demand for them has been strong.

Tata Motors will process and announce the allotments of 1,00,000 cars in the first phase of deliveries through a computerised random selection procedure.
If booking goes up on the expected lines the selection process may take a few weeks to complete. As the delivery of the Nano begins in July, two in every three applicants will perhaps have to wait longer.

Akshay Kumar in obscenity row

Akshay Kumar recently walked the ramp in the Lakme Fashion Week for designer Tarun Tahiliani. After doing his act he went to wife Twinkle Khanna and asked her to unbutton his jeans. This act brought in cheers and roar from the crowd but a certain section was shocked and considered it to be obscene and in bad taste.
A social worker ,Anil Nair has submitted a written complaint against the actor, his wife Twinkle, the designer and the organisers of the show to the Vakola police station. He has urged the police to book them for indecent, vulgar and obscene behaviour and submitted clipping and photographs of the event. He said they should be booked under section 292 related to sale of obscene objects and section 293, related with sale of obscene objects to young persons.
The police on its part is investigating the case and a senior police official said that the evidence is being examined before registering an FIR so that the case stands a chance in court. He added that the opinion of the legal experts have to be taken before reaching a conclusion with the case. Akshay Kumar is the brand ambassador of Levis jeans in India and his act was to promote the new range of jeans which comes with a tag ‘Unbuttoned’.

BSNL Plan

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has introduced attractive discounts and freebies to its post-paid mobile customers with effect from April 1, 2009.
The schemes feature increase in the number of monthly free calls and introduction of free/discounted call charges during night hours from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The Plan 99 for government employees will have free monthly calls of 50 minutes to BSNL lines in Kerala in addition to the free 100 SMS allowed per month.
Plan 725 has got maximum benefits in the revised scheme of things. It will have unlimited number of free calls within the BSNL network in Kerala and 725 minutes of free STD calls to any BSNL phone outside the State. In addition, unlimited number of free calls to any BSNL phone within the country will be available between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Plan 525 will have free calls worth Rs 300 and 300 free incoming calls while roaming within the country. For night calling, unlimited number of free calls are offered within the BSNL network in Kerala and 50 per cent discount for STD calls on the BSNL network in the country. The Plan has also got 40 free SMS per month.
For Plan 225, the existing monthly free usage is enhanced from Rs 60 to Rs 125 with 30 free SMS and for Plan 325, the free usage has been increased to Rs 150 with 40 free SMS.

PSU pay panel for 50-60% revision

Over 1.6 million employees working in the estimated 240 central public sector undertakings (PSUs) are likely to receive a 50 to 60 per cent salary increase, possibly with retrospective effect from January 2006.
The second PSU pay revision committee, headed by former Supreme Court Justice M Jagannadha Rao, is in advanced stages of finalising its award due April-end and plans to submit its report to the government soon after.
At the bottom of the PSU pay scale, an entry level attendant in a leading power PSU has a CTC of around Rs 22,000 per month, which could go up to Rs 33,000.
Executives of central public sector units have been given pay hikes of 25 to 45 per cent in the middle of Assembly elections. The raise benefiting over 3.7 lakh executives will be implemented with retrospective effect from January 1, 2007.
Heads of central enterprises like SAIL and ONGC will see their basic salary go up from Rs 31,500 to Rs 1.25 lakh a month. The new package also offers employees’ stock options (Esops), variable pay and risk rewards.
The implementation will be linked to the performance of each PSU.
The PSU executives’ salary is being revised after a gap of 10 years. The wages of workers are revised by each PSU separately through negotiations with labour organisations.

TCS to absorb 80 RR Donnelly staff

Around 80 employees working with the India unit of Chicago-based RR Donnelley & Sons will join the rolls of the country’s largest software exporter, Tata Consultancy Services, from June 1.
Both RR Donnelley and the back-office unit of TCS provide third party transaction processing services to a US-based financial services company. The US firm has embarked on a vendor consolidation drive, as a result of which it has decided to move some of the BPO assignments from RR Donnelley to TCS.
Most of the 80 employees that would be displaced as a result of this exercise would be absorbed in TCS centres in Chennai.

Guidelines to filing your income tax return

It is a legal obligation for every individual to file a return of income, whose taxable income during the year has exceeded the exemption limit of Rs 100,000 (Rs 135,000 in case of females and Rs 185,000 in case of senior citizens).
Additional exemption limits stated above are not applicable to the individuals who are Non-Resident Indians.
Documents to keep ready
It is fruitless to go to the war front without proper arms and ammunition. Hence, it is always advisable to keep all the documents required for preparation of the income tax return ready and handy before calculating your tax liability and preparing your tax return. Some common documents required by an individual for preparing the return are:
Form No. 16 (received from the employer): This will help to know your income from salary and tax deducted by your employer from your salary income.
Form No. 16A (received from all the payers who have deducted tax): You will first have to get this form collected from the parties who have deducted tax while making payment to you during the year. This includes banks and companies (with whom you have kept fixed deposits), parties to whom you have given loan, tenant to whom you have rented your property, et cetera.
Summary of all bank accounts operated during the year: This summary will give an idea about all the income earned during the year and investments and expenditure incurred. This assures that no part of income is left out and you do not miss out any eligible deductions.
Details of property owned during the year: If you have bought some property during the year, you will need details of rent received and receipts of municipal tax paid during the year. In addition to this, if you have taken this property through a loan, do carry the loan details and a copy of certificate of interest paid during the year.
Sale & purchase bill / documents / contract note in respect of investments / assets sold during the year: You will also need purchase documents corresponding to the sales made during the year. In case of a large number of transactions, it is advisable that you prepare a statement of sale and corresponding purchase of these investments and arrive at the amount of profit or loss, before actually calculating your taxable income.
Details of tax payments made during the year: This is required only if you have made advance tax payment during the year.

Which ITR Form is applicable to you?
With the introduction of new income tax return forms based on nature of income earned during the year, one needs to know relevance of each return form and select the right form.
For an individual, four forms have been introduced, the details of which are as under:

How to file the tax return
Today there are two options available to the individuals to file their return of income:

Under Electronic filing, the individual will have to follow the following procedure:

Get the tax return in a valid XML format (through the Income Tax department site or other online tax preparation sites)
Visit the Income Tax site by https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/index.do

Log on using the user-ID and password
Select the respective ITR form
Upload the XML file generated
Upon uploading, an acknowledgement will be generated.
If the file is uploaded with a digital signature, then the process of filing return is completed.

Sehwag got to his 11th ODI century with a six over long off achieving the milestone off just 60 balls making it the 7th fastest century in ODI history.

Sehwag broke the record of Mohammad Azharuddin 62-ball 100 that too came against New Zealand at Baroda in 1988.

Shahid Afridi holds the record for scoring the fastest century in One Day Internationals (off 37 balls) .

With this victory, India took an unbeatable 3-0 lead hence registering their maiden ODI series win in New Zealand and made history !!!

Banking System in India is dominated by nationalised banks. The nationalisation of banks in India took place in 1969 by Mrs. Indira Gandhi the then prime minister. The major objective behind nationalisation was to spread banking infrastructure in rural areas and make available cheap finance to Indian farmers. Fourteen banks were nationalised in 1969.

Before 1969, State Bank of India (SBI) was the only public sector bank in India. SBI was nationalised in 1955 under the SBI Act of 1955. The second phase of nationalisation of Indian banks took place in the year 1980.

Vivek Kundra will be new US CIO

The 34-year-old Vivek Kundra was appointed the first ever Federal Chief Information Officer by President Barack Obama .
Vivek Kundra was born in New Delhi in 1975, migrated with his parents to Tanzania where he lived till he was 11 and then moved to the US.
Kundra, will advise the US government and its various departments on the acquisition and use of technology and ensure proper functioning of the various government networks.
Kundra, who championed the use of websites and blogs like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube as better ways for to communicate with citizens, is expected to build on the broad use of technologies, such as the web, which President Obama's campaign team used extensively during the elections.

Anderson does not seem to realize the blunder, but quickly pulled her top back on when she discovered the accidental exposure. Anderson, who is a friend and muse of Westwood known for its outlandish design choice, but she had earlier walked the ramp wearing some of her creations.

International Working Woman's Day (IWD) is marked on March 08 every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.
The first International Women’s Day was held on 19 March 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and other European countries. German women selected this date because in 1848 the Prussian king had promised the vote for women.
The first International Women's Day was officially celebrated on the 19th of March 1911. The date was selected because on this day in 1848 a Prussian king had promised to make some unfulfilled reforms for women. However, the ground work for this blessed event has its beginning from the turn of the century. This was at a time when women force was entering into paid-jobs market.
In 1869 British MP John Stuart Mill was the first person in Parliament to call for women's right to vote. On 19 September 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. Women in other countries did not enjoy this equality and campaigned for justice for many years.
The very first International Women's Day was launched on 19 March (not 8 March). The date was chosen because on 19 March in the year of the 1848 revolution, the Prussian king recognized for the first time the strength of the armed people and gave way before the threat of a proletarian uprising. Among the many promise he made, which he later failed to keep, was the introduction of votes for women.
What is International Women's Day?
A look at the history of Women's Day, the numerous struggles for equality that women around the global faced and how this day came to be so honoured.Divided by borders, language, cultural background, economic and political differences; this day is celebrated by women across countries to represent decades of struggle for equality, justice, rights, peace and development. This occasion was first celebrated at the turn of the century, around the 1900's when the world was in a period of expansion and turbulence, booming in population growth and radical ideologies. Following is a brief chronology of the most important events:
1909 The first Women's Day was observed across the United States on 28 February.
1910 A conference of over 100 women from 17 countries established International Women's Day to honour the movement for women's rights.
1911 As a result of the decision taken the previous year, International Women's Day was marked for the first time on 19 March in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than 1 million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded the right to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.
1913-1914 As part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on February 1913. The very next month, women around Europe held rallies to protest the war and express solidarity with their sisters.
1917 After 2 million Russian soldiers died in war, women ran a strike for 'bread and peace'. Even with strong opposition from influential political and radical leaders, the women went on anyway. Days later, the Czar was forced to abdicate and women were granted the right to vote.
1945 The United Nations Organisation signed the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right.

Rights for women in India
Constitutional Rights
In a country where women still suffer the evils of dowry, domestic violence and infanticide, constitutional rights become inevitable to ensure a healthy and productive environment for them. The Indian constitution not only grants equality to women but also empowers the State to adopt measures to neutralize socio-economic, educational and political disadvantages to women. Fundamental rights ensure equality before the law, equal protection of law and prohibit discrimination against any citizen on the grounds of religion, race, caste or sex.On a more technical note, Article 14 in the Indian Constitution ensures equality in political, economic and social spheres. Article 15 prohibits discrimination against any citizen on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex etcetera. Article 15 (3) of the Indian Constitution allows the State to make any special provision for women and children. Article 16 provides for equality of opportunities in matter of public appointments for all citizens. Article 39(a) mentions that the State will direct its policies towards securing all citizens, men and women, the right to means of livelihood while Article 39 (c) ensures equal pay for equal work. Article 42 directs the State to ensure just and humane working conditions. Most importantly, the constitution imposes a fundamental duty on every citizen through Article 15 (A) (e) to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women. In brief, a woman can go to court if she is subjected to any form of discrimination. Consequently these rights protect woman in various issues such as marriage, children, abortion, crimes against women and inheritance. Though customs, traditions and religion dictate the way women are treated to a larger extent, these rights do limit the effects of these evils.
Laws on Crimes against Women
Women not getting a fair deal in society is not a new issue now. But this does not reduce the gravity of crimes against women. The rate of crimes against women is elevating sharply in India. Of the total crimes reported in the country, 7% constitute crimes against women. So we can imagine the number of crimes against women going unreported.Conventional laws such as the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, Sati Prevention Act, Dowry Prohibition Act and Indecent Representation of Women (Prevention) Act protect women from the more "traditional" crimes such as rape, abduction, dowry, torture, molestation, sexual harassment and selling of girls into slavery. But what about women caught in violent marriages? Since irretrievable breakdown of marriage is not a ground for divorce in India, these women have no hope. Methods used by courts to resolve disputes over custody of children, marital property, return of 'streedhan', are outdated to say the least. These methods weigh heavily against the interests of women.There is a glimmer of hope for these women though. Many women seek police help and use Section 498 A under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This law actually helps women get quicker and more advantageous settlements. Again, The Child Marriage Restraint Act specifies the cut-off age for marriage as 18 years, protecting women from child marriage. Section 494 of the IPC protects women from bigamy with a punishment of up to seven years imprisonment for the guilty. Another area of focus, while addressing crimes against women, is suicide. Housewives account for 52% of the total female suicide cases in India. Section 306 of the IPC can punish the suicide victim's husband with up to 10 years imprisonment if found guilty.Another law that protects women against a seemingly milder crime is Section 509 of the IPC. This law punishes individuals who have insulted the modesty of a woman. Offensive language, sounds, gestures and intrusion of a woman's privacy are punishable under this law. Outraging the modesty of a woman is also punishable under Section 354 of the IPC. Under this law, an individual who has assaulted a woman, used criminal force on her or outraged her modesty in any other way can be punished with imprisonment of up to 2 years.The number of laws to protect women may seem impressive, but framing laws is one thing, making sure they are being followed with maximum efficiency is another. We are all aware of countless husbands that will not allow their wives to set foot out of their houses, or rowdies who threaten and take advantage of women knowing they don't have the courage to speak up. A large percentage of women in India are not even aware of these laws. Along with these judicial provisions, we need every citizen to take responsibility and act against these evils whenever they see such incidents.

RBI cut rate

Hexaware to cut salary

Hexaware Technologies announced a 50 per cent salary cut in basic pay for 350 employees who are going to be benched, and a 2-10 per cent salary cut for employees above certain levels, the senior-most taking the largest pay cuts.

Sri Lankan cricket team attacked

Five members of the Sri Lankan cricket team were wounded when around a dozen gunmen attacked their bus as it drove under police escort on Tuesday(3rd March) to a stadium in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

Four Pakistan players -- Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis , Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavithana -- were injured after armed gunmen attacked the team bus and hurled grenades as they made their way to the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore to take part in the second Test.

The Chief Election Commission of India announced (2nd March 2009)that the five-phase polling to elect the 15th Lok Sabha will begin on April 16.

The fifth and final round of voting will be on May 13 and counting on May 16,is expected to be completed the same day.

In Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, elections will be held in five phases, while Bihar will vote in four phases. In Maharashtra and West Bengal, it will be in three phases.
In Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Orissa and Punjab, polls will be held in two phases, while in the remaining 15 States and seven Union Territories, the process will be completed in one phase.

The Commission has also decided to hold Assembly elections for Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa along with the General Elections.
For the first time, the country, except for Assam, Nagaland and Jammu and Kashmir, will use photo electoral rolls.

Tata Nano Booking

The Nano could be the least expensive car at a little over Rs 1 lakh but its booking amount is not going to come cheap.The vehicles will be on display at dealerships from the first week of April 2009 and bookings will begin from the second week of April.
According to dealers, customers could end up paying up to Rs 70,000 as booking amount for the car.
Compare this to its closest rival, the Maruti 800, which costs nearly twice as much but the down payment is Rs 35,000 and Rs 50,000.
The Chevrolet Spark costs Rs 3.25 lakh but involves a booking amount of Rs 5,000. Similarly, a buyer would have to pay Rs 88,000 while booking the Hyundai i10, which costs Rs 4.10 lakh.

The Tata Motors will give all the details concerning bookings on March 23.
Tata Motors may consider appointing an independent agency to select customers on a priority basis.
While the company has not detailed any production schedules, it is reliably learnt that the Nano will be assembled at the Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand which is already home to the Ace pickup. This is an interim arrangement till the mother plant at Sanand in Gujarat is ready to roll out the car in numbers exceeding 150,000 units annually. The engines will be assembled in the Pune facility and then despatched to Pantnagar.

The Oscar winning team of 'Slumdog Millionaire' was greeted with tears of joy, garlands and champagne at the airport Mumbai on its return from Resul Pookutty holds his Oscar trophy on arriving at the Mumbai airport.

Sound technician Resul Pookutty and actor Irrfan Khan were virtually mobbed by a large crowd of onlookers who had gathered at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, while Azharuddin and Rubina - the two slum kids who acted in the movie - were the cynosure of all eyes.
As they stepped out of the airport, the family members of both kids hugged them with tears of joy at their achievement.

When Pookutty stepped out, a cheering crowd offered him a bottle of champagne which he opened to a huge round of applause. All the team members were then garlanded by friends,
, relatives and fans. Pookutty was taken to his home in Goregaon suburb of northwest Mumbai in an open car.

1. To pay taxes online the taxpayer will select the relevant challan i.e. ITNS 280, ITNS 281, ITNS 282 or ITNS 283, as applicable.
2. Enter its PAN / TAN as applicable. There will be an online check on the validity of the PAN / TAN entered.
3. If PAN/ TAN is valid the taxpayer will be allowed to fill up other challan details like accounting head under which payment is made, name and address of TAN and also select the bank through which payment is to be made, etc.
4. On submission of data entered a confirmation screen will be displayed. If the taxpayer confirms the data entered in the challan, it will be directed to the net-banking site of the bank.
5. The taxpayer will login to the net-banking site with the user id/ password provided by the bank for net-banking purpose and enter payment details at the bank site.
6. On successful payment a challan counterfoil will be displayed containing CIN, payment details and bank name through which e-payment has been made. This counterfoil is proof of payment being made.

Govt cuts excise, service tax

Govt . gave up Rs 30,000 crore of revenue on an annual basis by announcing a slew of indirect tax concessions to bolster sagging demand for industrial goods and services.
IT companies welcomed the announcement on Section 10AA of the Income-Tax Act. They hoped that the removal of the anomaly would help them get full tax benefits as had been originally envisaged in the SEZ scheme.

Railway Budget 2009

Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, on Friday (13th Feb 2009)presented his sixth Railway Budget.
Highlights
-Freight capacity up 78%
-Railways have raised USD 100 million at 4% interest
-Feasibility study underway for bullet trains between Delhi-Amritsar, Ahmedabad-Pune, Hyderabad-Vijaywada- Chennai, Chennai-Bangalore, Delhi-Patna, Kolkata-Haldia and Ernakulam-Howrah.
-Railways invested over Rs 36 crores
-Railways cash reserves touched 90, 000 crores
-4 call centres set up for railway enquiry
-Railways has set up four call centres for enquiries
-Invested Rs 70, 000 crore out of surplus in last four years
-To invest Rs 2, 30,000 crore in the 11th Plan
-Freight has grown at the rate of 8% in the past five years
-Decrease in the number of accidents in Railways since 2003

Reduction in passenger fares of ordinary passenger trains by Re 1 for fares costing up to Rs fifty per passenger for journey above ten kms.
Second class and sleeper class fares of all mail/express and ordinary passenger trains to be reduced by 2 per cent for tickets costing Rs 50 and more per passenger.
Fares of AC First Class, AC II tier, AC III tier and AC Chair Car also to be reduced by two per cent.
All AC and Mail Express fares cut by 2%
- Freight rates kept unchanged
-Freight has grown at the rate of 8% in the past five years. Freight loading in the current year has come down due to economic downturn, because of which revenue has fallen. Otherwise it would have touched Rs one lakh crore.

AD-VALOREM DUTIES: Are the duties determined as a certain percentage of the price of the product.
APPROPRIATION BILL: A Bill that enables withdrawal of money from the Consolidated Fund to pay off expenses. These are instruments that Parliament clears after the demand for grants has been voted by the Lok Sabha.
BUDGET DEFICIT: A situation that arises when expenses exceed revenues. Here the entire budgetary exercise falls short of allocating enough funds to a certain area.
BUDGET ESTIMATES: Are estimates of Government spending on various sectors during the year, together with an estimate of the income in the form of tax revenues. These estimates contain an estimate of Fiscal Deficit and the Revenue Deficit for the year.
CAPITAL GOODS: Are goods that are used in the manufacturing of finished products.
CAPITAL BUDGET: Consists of capital receipts and payments, loans and advances granted by the Union Government to State and Union Territory governments, Government companies, corporations and other parties. This also accounts for Market loans, borrowings from the Reserve Bank of India and other institutions through the sale of Treasury Bills and loans acquired from foreign governments.
CAPITAL PAYMENTS: Are expenses incurred on acquisition of assets.
CAPITAL EXPENDITURE: Is the expenditure on acquisition of assets such as land, building and machinery, and also investments in shares, etc. Other items that also fall under this category include, loans and advances sanctioned by the Centre to State governments, union territories and public sector undertakings.
CAPITAL RECEIPT: Are loans raised by the Government from the public (often referred to as Market loans); borrowings by the Government from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other parties through sale of Treasury Bills; loans received from foreign governments and bodies; and recoveries of loans granted by the Union Government to State governments, Union Territories and other parties. It can also include the proceeds from divestment of Government Equity in public enterprises.
CENVAT: A replacement for the earlier MODVAT scheme and is meant for reducing the cascading effect of indirect taxes on finished products. The scheme is a more extensive one with most goods brought under its preview.
COUNTERVAILING DUTIES: Are levied on imports that may lead to price rise in the domestic Market . It is imposed with the intention of discouraging unfair trading practices by other countries.
CONSOLIDATED FUND: Comprises of all revenues received by Government , the loans raised by it, and receipts from recoveries of loans granted by it.
CONTINGENCY FUND: Is the fund into which the Government utilises to meet emergencies or unforeseen expenditures, especially when it cannot wait for authorisation by Parliament. The Contingency Fund is placed at the disposal of the President for such financial exigencies. The amount that is withdrawn from the fund is recouped from Consolidated Fund.
CURRENT Account DEFICIT: Is the difference between the nation's exports and imports.
CUSTOM DUTIES: Levies on goods imported to or exported from the country.
CENTRAL PLAN: Centre's budgetary support to the Plan including the internal and extra budgetary resources raised by the Public Sector Undertakings.
DIRECT TAXES: Taxes directly imposed on the customers such as Income Tax and Corporate Tax.
DISINVESTMENT: Dilution of the Government �s stake in Public Sector Undertakings.
DEMAND FOR GRANTS: A statement of expenditure estimate from the Consolidated Fund that requires the approval of the Lok Sabha.
EXCISE DUTIES: Duties imposed on goods manufactured within the country.
FISCAL DEFICIT: Difference between the Revenue Receipts and Total Expenditure.
Finance BILL: Government �s plans for imposing new taxes, modifying of the existing tax structure or continuing the existing tax structure beyond the period approved by the Parliament.
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: Total Market value of the goods and services manufactured within the country in a financial year.
GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT: Total market value of the finished goods and services manufactured within the country in a given financial year along with income earned by the local residents from investments made abroad, minus the income earned by foreigners in the domestic Market .
INDIRECT TAXES: Taxes imposed on goods that are manufactured, imported or exported. Eg. Excise Duties, Custom Duties etc.
MODVAT: Modified Value Added Tax, introduced in 1986, is a tax for allowing relief to final manufacturers on the excise duty borne by their suppliers for goods manufactured by them. It has now been replaced by the CENVAT scheme.
MONETISED DEFICIT: Level of support provided by RBI to Centre�s borrowing programme.
NATIONAL DEBT: Debt owed by the Government as a result of earlier borrowing to Finance budget deficits.
NON-PLAN EXPENDITURE: Consists of Revenue and Capital Expenditure on interest payments, Defence Expenditure, subsidies, postal deficit, police, pensions, economic services, loans to public sector enterprises and loans as well as grants to State governments, Union territories and foreign governments.
PEAK RATE: Is the highest rate of Customs Duty applicable on an item.
PERFORMANCE BUDGET: Is a compilation of activities of different ministries and departments.
PLAN EXPENDITURE: Money given from the Government �s Account for the Central Plan is called Plan Expenditure. It consists of both Revenue Expenditure and Capital Expenditure, Central Assistance to States and Union Territories.
PLAN OUTLAY: is the amount for expenditure on projects, schemes and programmes announced in the Plan. The money for the Plan Outlay is raised through budgetary support and internal and extra-budgetary resources. The budgetary support is also shown as plan expenditure in Government accounts.
PRIMARY DEFICIT: Fiscal Deficit minus Interest payments.
PROGRESSIVE TAX: is a tax where the rich pay a larger percentage of income than the poor.
PUBLIC ACCOUNT: Is an Account where money received through transactions not relating to consolidated fund is kept.
REGRESSIVE TAX: Is a tax in which the poor pay a larger percentage of income than the rich. Progressive Tax is the exact opposite of regressive tax.
REVENUE DEFICIT: Is the difference between Revenue Expenditure and Revenue Receipts.
REVENUE BUDGET: Consists of Revenue Receipts and Revenue Expenditure of the Government .
REVISED ESTIMATES: Is the difference between the Previous Budget Estimates and the actual expenditure, which is usually presented in the following Budget.
REVENUE EXPENDITURE: Expenditure that does not result in the creation of assets. This refers to the money spent on the normal functioning of the government departments and various other services such as interest charges on debt incurred by the Government .
REVENUE RECEIPT: consist of tax collected by the government and other receipts consisting of interest and dividend on investments made by government, fees and other receipts for services rendered by Government .
REVENUE SURPLUS: Is the excess of Revenue Receipts over Revenue Expenditure. It is the opposite of Revenue Deficit,
SUBSIDIES: Financial aid provided by the Center to individuals or a group of individuals to improve their skills or businesses.
TARIFF: Tax on imports.
TWIN DEFICITS: refers to the trade deficit and the Government budget deficit
VALUE-ADDED TAX: is a tax levied on a firm as a percentage of its value added, to avoid the multiplying effect of taxes as the product passes through different stages of production. The tax is based on the difference between the value of the output and the value of the inputs used to produce it. The aim is to tax a firm only for the value added by it to the inputs it is using for manufacturing its output.

Slumdog Millionaire" swept Britain's BAFTA film awards on Sunday(8th Feb. 2009) winning best film, director and five other categories.
Slumdog Millionaire”, a British picture about a young man from the slums of Mumbai who seeks to rise from rags to riches by winning a TV game show.
Adding yet another feather in his cap ,music maestro Allah Rakha Rahman bagged the BAFTA award in the best music score category for "Slumdog Millionaire".

Apart from Rahman, Resul Pookutty was the other Indian to win a BAFTA award for best sound editing for “Slumdog Millionaire.

Indian software industry will touch $60 bn in 2009

The Indian software and services industry is expected to grow 16 percent this fiscal and log revenues of $60 billion despite the global slowdown. The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) said in its report that together with the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, the revenues are expected to top $71.7 billion with a growth of 17 percent.
Due to the strong fundamentals and as a derivative of the value of global customers, the Indian industry will continue to grow in spite of global slowdown.

Following are the key highlights of Nasscom's projections:
-Total IT-BPO industry to touch 71.7 billion in 2008-09
-The industry to account for 5.8 percent of the country's gross domestic product
-Domestic BPO market to growth by over 40 percent

Mastek staff on ‘virtual bench’

Mumbai based Mastek Ltd has put about 10 per cent of its total employee base on a ‘virtual bench’ for up to 12 months, a move which will help it stay profitable in the current economic downturn.
The 425 employees who have been identified would receive a monthly allowance for up to 12 months depending on their experience and qualification.
Alternatively, the 425 employees – who are either trainees or junior employees – have been given the option of leaving the mid-sized IT company immediately with a compensation package. As on December 31, 2008, Mastek had 4,243 employees, of whom about 27 per cent were based on-site while the rest were at various offshore locations. Mastek, which follows a July-June calendar, has given guidance of net profit at Rs 32-33 crore for the March quarter.

Historic Attractions in Delhi
- India Gate is a 42 meter high arch, which was designed by Edwin Luytens. It was built in 1911 as a war memorial to commemorate the death of 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army in World War I. While the names of the martyrs are inscribed all along the arch's walls, an eternal flame was lit there in 1971.

- Purana Qila (Old Fort) was built by Sher Shah Suri on a hill on the banks of the river Yamuna between 1538 A.D and 1545 AD. There is a mosque with a double storied octagonal tower from where the Mughal emperor, Humayun fell and died.
- Jantar Mantar Observatory was built by the Rajput King of Jaipur, Sawai Jai Singh inside Connaught Place in 1724. Its purpose was to observe the movements of the stars and planets.
- Chandni Chowk was designed by Jahanara Begum, Shah Jahan's daughter. A commercial market, this is one of best known wholesale markets for textiles, and electronic goods in India.
- Safdarjang's Tomb was built in 1753-54 as the mausoleum of Safdarjang, the viceroy of the Awadh under the Mughal Emperor, Mohammed Shah. Visit the smaller pavilions in it
- Popular as Lal Quila, Red Fort was built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648. The premise contains Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, the Moti Masjid, the Shahi Burj and many other architectural splendors.
- Tughlaqabad fort was built by Ghazi Malik, founder of the Tughlaq Dynasty in 1321 at Tughlaqabad. Though it is in its ruins today, but the lofty walls, double-storied bastions, colossal towers, palaces, mosques and spacious halls speak of its majesty
- Jami Masjid or the Masjid-i-Jahan Numa, is the premier mosque in Old Delhi. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan , it was completed in 1656 AD

- Parliament House is circular structure almost a kilometer in circumference, and was designed by the famed architect Edward Luytens to house the Indian Parliament.
- Rashtrapati Bhawan is the official residence of India's President with 340 rooms and an area of about 330 acres.
- Birla Mandir, built by the industrialist Raja Baldev Birla, has idols of various deities.
- Visit Shanti Vana where India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated.

RBI holds key rates, cuts growth forecast

The Reserve Bank of India left its short-term rates and banks' cash reserve requirements unchanged on 27th Jan. 2009 as it waited to gauge the impact of its aggressive easing since mid-October to stem a sharp economic downturn.
Fiscal measures to shore up the economy against the global downturn would sharply widen the federal government's fiscal deficit, the Reserve Bank of India said in its quarterly policy review.
It also cut its forecast for economic growth in the current fiscal year to 7.0 percent "with a downward bias" from an estimate of 7.5-8.0 percent in October, bringing it broadly in line with recent government and market predictions.
Wholesale price inflation was projected to fall below 3 percent in annual terms by the end of the fiscal year in March.
The central bank left its lending rate steady at 5.5 percent and its reverse repo rate , at which it absorbs surplus cash from the banking system, unchanged at 4.0 percent.
It has also kept the cash reserve ratio, the amount of funds banks have to keep on deposit with it, unchanged at 5.00 percent.

12 states to adopt NCERT text books

Students in a dozen states would read NCERT books in government-run schools from the coming academic session in place of state text books.
Coming a step closer to bring uniformity in curriculum across the country, students in a dozen states would read NCERT books in government-run schools from the coming academic session in place of state text books.
With this, 31.3 per cent of the senior secondary level students across India will study books prepared by NCERT.
This became possible after the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) granted the copyright to 12 states to use its text books in their respective state board schools.
The states are Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab and Goa.
The framework has been ratified by almost all the states.
The move would also do away with any disparities among the state boards and give students enough confidence to compete at the national level with ease, said an NCERT official.
For the record, several state boards have carried out a series of changes in their course curricula in line with the present mandate. The changes include bifurcating the course curriculum at the plus-two level and updating syllabus on a par with CBSE schools.

Satyam Computer Services founder-chairman B Ramalinga Raju resigned from the IT major's board after admitting a multi-crore fraud in the company’s accounts.
In a notification to the stock exchanges, the Hyderabad-based IT firm said Raju and Managing Director Rama Raju had resigned early Wednesday(7 th Jan 2009) and that the Securities and Exchanges Board of India (SEBI) had been informed.

He admitted to have inflated cash and bank balances of Rs 5,040 crore as against Rs 5,361 crore reflected in the books of accounts.

Shares of the company plunged by over 40 per cent soon after the resignations. Satyam, considered a ripe proposition for acquisition, was pushed into crisis after Raju was forced to abandon the acquisition of Maytas Infrastructure and Maytas Properties promoted by his son.

Thekkady
Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of the famous Wildlife Sanctuaries in India, spread across 777 Sq. Kms out of which 360 Sq. Kms is thick forest, is one of the best places for viewing wild elephants. There is a 26 Sq. Km. artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river. A boat cruise on the lake is a great way to watch the wildlife.
Wild animals like the Elephant, Gaur, Sambar Deer and wild boar, which can be easily seen from close quarters during the serene boat ride. Other Mammals like the Nilgiri Thar, the lion tailed macaque, the bonnet macaque, the Malabar giant Squirrel, the flying Squirrel, the Tiger, the jungle cat and the sloth bear are seen only once in a while. Around 265 different species of birds like the Hornbill, stork, woodpecker, kingfisher, raptor, cormorant, grackle, darter etc. can also be seen.
How to reach
The nearest airport is Cochin, which is 192 kms [5 hrs drive] away. Nearest Rail head is Kottayam which is approx. 120 kms away. Periyar is well connected by road.

Periyar National Park
National Park is open from morning 0600 hrs to 1800 hrs daily. Boating is the only way to view the wildlife in Periyar National Park.

Timing: From 07:00 hrs to 11:00 hrs From 14:00 hrs. to 16:00hrs.
Trekking
Trekking is another wonderful way to view the wildlife from close quarters. Early morning trekking to the jungles can be arranged. It will be good if you can carry your trekking boots and gear. 4 days trekking into the Periyar jungles with overnight tent camping can also be arranged.

Spices are found in abundance in Periyar. A guided Plantation tour to familiarize you with different spices and plantations like cardamom, pepper, tea, coffee, cloves, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg, cumin seed, garlic etc. is a main attraction of Thekkady.

Kovalam
Kovalam one of the most beautiful and famous beaches in South India, is the best place for relaxation. It has three different beaches of which the Lighthouse beach is the most famous beach. Ayurvedic treatment especially during monsoon is another attraction of Kovalam.

Enroute to Kanyakumari 40 Kms away is the majestic old palace famous for its 17th and 18th century murals, carved mahogany ceiling, coloured mica windows, secret underground passages, inner courtyards, durbar hall, museum, four poster medicinal bed, Begian mirrors, Granite dance halls and special lac shiny floors made of a unique combination of egg white, jaggery, lime, burnt coconut, charcol and river sand. The palace is built in the traditional Travancore architectural style.
Suchindram Temple
Enroute to Kanyakumari, it is another famous attraction - The Sthanumalaya temple which is a popular pilgrim centre. the temple also houses an emporium of art treasures from various periods in history.

Kumarakom: 16 kms from Kottyam, Kumarakom is a small backwater town.
Kumarakom, situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake is one the world famous Backwater destinations of Kerala. Fishing, Boating and visits to the countryside make this destination a unique place to look forward to. Kumarakom also has a small bird sanctuary where different species of birds can be seen. "Indian Muslims "occupy a unique position

All over India, Eid celebrations on 9th December were muted. Many Muslims wore black bands in protest against the Mumbai terror strikes while imams of several prominent mosques spoke out against terrorism and pledged to stand united against terrorists.

The Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid India's biggest mosque called the 'jihad' which took nearly 200 lives in Mumbai a crime against all people. He also slammed Pakistan for sponsoring terrorism in India. So did the imam of another prominent mosque, the Fatehpuri Masjid. The nationwide protests on Eid by Muslims against the terror attacks weren't a one-off event. In the immediate aftermath of the Mumbai attack, the city's Muslims refused to allow the dead terrorists to be buried in Muslim graveyards.

Earlier this week, Muslim organisations in Mumbai took out a rally to send the message that killers of innocent people are the enemies of Islam. And over the past few days, several Muslim icons of India, including Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, have spoken out against terrorism. These strong words and actions by India's Muslims are a slap in the face of groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba which are intent on spreading terror in the name of Islam and to supposedly avenge wrongs done to Indian Muslims. What Indian Muslims are saying is that terror has no religion. But by clearly speaking out against Islamist terrorism, India's Muslims are taking away any justification that the terrorists might claim for their bloody acts.

Groups like LeT not only want to spread immediate mayhem but eventually to break up India. India, with its 150-million Muslim minority population, is a direct challenge to Islamist terror groups. Nothing would please the terrorists more than if blasts and terror attacks were followed by communal violence. But every time there has been a terrorist act, Indians, irrespective of religion, have closed ranks.

This has been so since 1993 when terrorists first struck in a big way in Mumbai. Since then there have been several terror attacks across India, but none has provoked rioting or large-scale violence. Indian Muslims occupy a unique position. They're the largest Muslim minority anywhere and practise an Islam that is much more syncretic than elsewhere.

At a time when radical Islamic ideologies are trying to gain the upper hand across the world, Indian Muslims could offer a compelling counter-narrative. Indian Muslims have already given a fitting answer to the Islamist groups that were behind the Mumbai terror attacks.

A committee of the U.N. Security Council has added four leaders of a Pakistani militant group to a list of people and groups facing sanctions for ties to al Qaeda or the Taliban, including a freeze on assets and travel ban, the U.N. said .
The four are leaders of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, considered an al Qaeda affiliate that India has accused of being behind last month's attacks in Mumbai, which killed at least 179 people.
The militants added to the sanctions list include Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, which the U.N. statement described as the leader of the group.
The others are Pakistan-born Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the group's chief of operations; Haji Muhammad Ashraf, its chief of finance; and India-born Mahmoud Mohammad Ahmed Bahaziq, described as a financier for the group who served as its chief in Saudi Arabia.
The same four were hit with U.S. Treasury Department sanctions in May. The U.N. sanctions, covered by Security Council resolution 1267 from 1999, include the mandatory freezing of assets and travel bans.
Earlier this week a former head of the Pakistani military's Inter-Services Intelligence agency said the United States wanted to include him on the U.N. blacklist, but he was not among the newly sanctioned individuals.
Long retired, Lieutenant-General Hamid Gul told Reuters in Pakistan the U.S. moves against him began several weeks ago, pre-dating the latest controversy surrounding the ISI.

The nuclear deal will open a new era in Indian power sector.
The most obvious is nuclear power. France and Russia have had nuclear cooperation agreements with India ready for months, waiting only for the green light from the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group. General Electric and Westinghouse are reported to have $14 billion worth of agreements in the pipeline for setting up power plants.
Within a year of the formalities being completed, agreements for setting up 50,000 MW of nuclear power plants should be in place. Also, the completion of the agreement and anticipation of vastly increased FDI would renew the confidence of Indian and foreign investors and raise share prices.
In the longer run, India has no option but to tap FDI for the power sector. India’s current power generating capacity of around 180,000 MW is short of its needs by at least 30,000 MW. If it wishes to maintain a long term growth rate of eight per cent, then even after allowing for increases in energy efficiency, it will have to double its generating capacity every ten years. By 2028, therefore, it will have to add around 630,000 MW of power generating capacity, of which all but around 50,000 MW would have to be thermal-based.

Google reports 35% rise in net profit

Google Inc reported a weaker-than-expected 35 per cent rise in net profit as the company blamed lower returns from managing its huge cash pile rather than softening sales of online advertising.
Shares of the company tumbled 8 per cent to below $500, as Wall Street has come to count on Google to deliver revenue and earnings surprises over and above expectations each quarter.
The disappointing profit came as Google said second-quarter online ad revenue held up well across sectors and world regions despite a weaker global economy that has tripped up rivals. Officials pointed to problems managing its cash - now totaling $12.7 billion - in the face of volatile interest rates, the cash drain of recent acquisitions and higher costs to hedge foreign currency risk as operations expand overseas. Google shares fell as much as 10 per cent from a Nasdaq close of $533.44.

Country’s biggest software exporter reported a growth rate of 7 per cent in its consolidated net profit to touch Rs 1291 crore in the first quarter ended June 30. The company which narrowly missed the forecasts saw a 24 per cent revenue growth to touch Rs 6411 crore. Analysts had estimated Rs 6500 crore.

The Chinese army ,PLA is making fresh incursions into the Fingertip Area of Sikkim,Indian state of northeast ,this is the time that our government supported by left party should issue a statement .

We should boycott the Olympics held at Beijing if they are not willing to stop the incursion in Indian territory.

There have been 65 transgressions into Sikkim in the last six months and on June 16, PLA men entered the region in light vehicles and later returned to their territory.

Army officers in the area recount numerous attempts in recent months by the Chinese to cross the border and remove the heaps of stones used as border markers.

Popular online video site YouTube on Wednesday (07.05.2008)launched its Indian
edition, www.youtube.co.in
It features a localised homepage and search functions, allowing users to create and share videos, discover the most popular and relevant videos in India, and connect with other Indian and global users.
Launching the Indian version ,YouTube’s chief technology officer and co-founder Steve Chen said that "YouTube India will not only offer Indian users more relevant content but also provide a platform to share unique and diverse culture and lifestyle with the largest online video community in the world.”
A subsidiary of Google, YouTube in India has signed partnerships with various firms including Eros Entertainment, Rajshri Films, IIFA, the Ministry of Tourism, IIT Delhi, NDTV, UTV, Zoom TV, India TV and Krishcricket. It also aims to facilitate connections among large non-resident Indian community.
Internationally, it has partnerships with content providers like CBS, BBC, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, NBA and The Sundance Channel.

The RBI on Tuesday (29th April 2008)hiked Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 0.25 per cent from May 24 to control inflation-stoking cash in the system but kept all other official rates (repo, reverse repo, bank rates )unchanged.
The central bank projected economic growth of 8.0 to 8.5 percent in the fiscal year that began this month, after an estimated 8.7 percent in 2007/08, and aimed for inflation of "around 5.5 percent" this fiscal year but with the goal of lowering it close to 5.0 percent as soon as possible.
The decision comes as annual inflation holds above 7 percent, its highest in more than three years, due in part to rises in international food, oil and metal prices.

India's satellite PSLV creates history !!!

Setting a world record, India's Polar rocket on Monday(28th April 2008 at 9:23AM) successfully placed ten satellites, including the country's remote sensing satellite, (Cartosat-2A )into orbit in a single mission.

It is for the first time in the world that ten satellites were launched in a single mission. Russia had earlier luanched eight satellites together.

Besides the 690 kg CARTOSAT-2A, the PSLV-C9 is also carrying ISRO's Indian Mini Satellite-1, weighing 83 kg, and eight nano satellites built by universities and research institutes in Canada and Germany .

While the CARTOSAT-2A, carrying state-of-the-art panchromatic camera, will be used for mapping purposes and management of natural resources, the IMS-1 will be used as a platform for trying out advanced technology in future launches.

The high-resolution mapping satellite CARTOSAT 2-A, which, while placed at a height of over 600 kilometres, can identify objects as small as a car.

Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) announced a net profit of Rs 4508.76 crore for the year-ended March 31, 2008 as compared with Rs 3757.29 crore for the year ended March 31, 2007.
Total income has increased from Rs 15156.52 crore for the year-ended March 31, 2007 to Rs 18979.67 crore for the year ended March 31, 2008.
The Group has posted a net profit of Rs 5026.02 crore for the year ended March 31, 2008 as compared with Rs 4212.63 crore for the year ended March 31, 2007.

Financial data provider Thomson Corp acquire Reuters Group of a $17.2 billion deal .
Following the completion of the deal, the shares of the combined entity, named Thomson Reuters, on 17th April began trading on Toronto, New York and London.
Thomson had reached an agreement to acquire Reuters for about $17.2 billion in a cash and stock deal almost a year ago.
The two companies together have over 50,000 employees with operations in 93 countries on six continents and collectively had a revenue of $12.4 billion in 2007.

27 percent quota to OBCs

The Supreme Court on 10th April 2008 upheld the Constitution amendment law providing for 27 per cent quota for OBCs in IITs, IIMs and other Central educational institutions but excluded the creamy layer from the benefit.

A five-judge Constitution bench by a unanimous verdict cleared the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 providing for the quota.
The bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan excluded the creamy layer among the OBCs from the quota benefit.

In effect, the reservation policy can be put in place for the 2008-09 academic session

Besides the Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan , the Bench comprised Justices Arijit Pasayat, C K Thakker, R V Raveendran and Dalveer Bhandari.

China has systematically settled Hans from mainland China and the Hui Muslims from central China in Tibet in order to reduce ethnic Tibetans to a minority and dilute the majority status of Buddhism. It has similarly settled Hans in Xinjiang in order to reduce the Uighurs to a minority and dilute the impact of Islam.

3.China ever held a single democratic election in Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia since the Communists captured power in 1949.

4. Beijing never allow a single dissident leader to interact with the media and foreign diplomats.
